Sponsors American Licorice Company & Butler University join again this year to support connection and empowerment of young black leaders

01/15/24 – Indianapolis, IN – Fishers High School Future Black Leaders Club is looking forward to welcoming approximately 400 local students for the 6th annual Black Leaders Summit. Hosted by sponsor Butler University, the event will take place on Friday, February 9th, with more than a dozen Indianapolis-area schools represented.
The theme of this year’s Summit is Unity, and will include speakers and breakout sessions to facilitate connection, community, and empowerment of young black students who currently attend predominantly white institutions. Additionally, sponsors American Licorice Co. will be in attendance to announce the launch of a new internship program, providing Future Black Leaders, INC. members with professional experience at American Licorice this summer.
In anticipation of the Summit, Fishers High School Senior and current co-president of Future Black Leaders Club, Katrell Readus, shared, “I have had the privilege over the last several years to see the event grow, shift, and evolve to further encompass and incorporate the value of Black excellence, [which is] one of the central standards for Future Black Leaders. The Summit, in my mind, represents camaraderie, passion, endurance, and, of course, unity.”
Co-president Brooklyn Ferrell and Committee Co-Chair Jayden Rucker add they are excited to see leadership opportunities for the attendees develop and be put into action in each of their schools.
Fishers High School and Future Black Leaders Club alum, and current CEO of Future Black Leaders, INC., shares his enthusiasm around the connections to be made among the many future leaders in attendance: “We have our junior high, high school, and college students all attending the Summit together [to showcase] Black excellence. If that isn’t Unity, I don’t know what is.”
The Future Black Leaders organizations aspire for the Summit to focus on strategies to empower the next generation, by amplifying diverse voices, cultivating mentorship opportunities, and fostering collaborations that will address systemic inequalities and champion equity.
In a cultural moment where young people of color continually struggle to have their value, their achievements, and their potential recognized and supported, the work to be done at the Summit is especially critical this year.
