Position Overview:

This is a Managerial role in plant operational processes as they relate to SQF, product quality, food safety, and weights & measures. This position is accountable for maintaining quality, sanitation, and food safety standards for manufacturing processes and for the provision of programs, systems, and training to ensure that those standards are maintained. S/he shall ensure that the process and finished products meet the established requirements of the organization and that the process complies with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.

This position is responsible for maintaining product testing, internal quality audits, sample collection, and record-keeping in accordance with SQF principles at Union City.  The managerial role person be capable of understanding SQF needs and forecasts upcoming opportunities and vocal about it.  Be in the forefront of analyzing current trends, liability claims, regulatory requirements and product development. Understands each ingredient risk and brings forth discussion with SCO, CFT meetings and production.  Rather than going with the flow, can hold product for quality defects, and understand cost of business. Protect company’s interest in legal situations and understand ramifications in releasing product and labeling concerns. Organize and develop procedures using the template provided by Director.  Develop procedures that do work and implement them after buy-in by other departments. Be a role model to the QA team and be dependable in making decisions. Question upper management and Director on any outcome or decision contrary to the industry expectations and bring forth value to the conversations in protecting company’s interest. 

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Quality Assurance Management:  Implement Quality Control Specifications for the Manufacturing Process, training and safety; ensure local, state, federal and company quality standards are met for product produced by the facility, promote a team environment between Quality Assurance and all other functional departments in order to meet the needs of the external customer and to foster SQF quality culture. 
  • Manufacturing Quality Control: Implements programs and procedures for testing incoming raw ingredients and packaging materials, in-process materials, and finished products to meet specifications, establish product specifications to insure highest quality products reach consumers 
  • Quality Systems:  Implement and manage the SQF systems by which Quality is measured in the facility, including written standards for incoming materials, rework procedures, product hold procedures, records retention policy, self-audit of the facility, regulatory labeling, Good Manufacturing Practices, pest control operation, plant sanitation, sanitation of equipment, processes for controlling inbound and outbound materials, product recall procedures.
  • Food Safety Systems:  Maintain a documented Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Program (HACCP), HARPC (Hazard Analysis risk based preventive controls) with critical control points to insure product leaving the facility will not cause illness or injury to consumers.
  • Food Security Systems:  Maintain a documented Food Defense Plan which includes traceability of incoming raw ingredients and outbound finished product, visitors’ policy, controlled access to all areas of the facility.
  • Process Control and Design Review:  Review each step in the manufacturing process from incoming raw materials and storage, to shipping of finished products to customers, applying continuous improvement principles to the process; apply process improvement concepts to common manufacturing and quality systems throughout the organization.
  • Responsible for Food Safety and serve as back up SQF Practitioner.
  • Training: Be current with regulatory, customer and auditing body requirements and educate management, plant associates and train plant personnel.  Convey information and train based on the knowledge gap in a simplified easy to understand language.  Use translators as necessary for the audience. Suggest resource allocation as needed. Work along with SQF coordinator on day to date functions.
  • CAPA analysis and trigger A3 corrective actions and perform lead role in investigations and act as a liaison when opportunities arise 
  • Affect change through indirect leadership
  • Write SOPs and work instructions
  • Effectively work with production team and other members of quality team to develop and maintain a robust and effective food safety and quality system
  • This position may perform special projects as requested by the New Products Development/QA manager.

 

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Minimum of three to five years of experience in the Confectionery industry or other food related industries with prior experience in creating and implementing quality systems.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in food technology or the science strongly preferred.
  • Require proven quality leadership experience and possess strong analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of analytical/laboratory instrumentation a must.
  • Excellent written/verbal communication/computer skills.
  • HACCP, SQF and HARPC certified

Qualifications:

  • Must also possess the ability to analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
